All three are key aspects of our life. But let’s look at their definitions and dependencies again – with the help of Cambridge dictionary and online sources.
Nature: all the animals, plants, rocks etc. in the world and all the features, forces, and processes that happen or exist independently of people, such as the weather, the sea, mountains, the production of young animals or plants, and growth.
Society: the state of being together with other people.
Capital: well, it is hard to get a clear and precise definition for this one … because economics is theory and capital is also defined as such. Hence for most of us in our global society, and in broad terms, capital would be anything that confers value or benefit to its owners, such as a factory and its machinery, intellectual property like patents, or the financial assets of a business or an individual, also per Adam Smith we include people as capital and much more.
Nature and Society have a clear definition. Nature is nature, does not need the society. Society needs nature. Society has complexity, because of people.
Capitalism as an economic and political system is adjustable and should keep being innovating and adapting. Especially in our era, where nature and society are being challenged immensely through the climate crisis, wars, conflicts, polarization, lack of inclusion, leadership and equity.
Nature is a given and we have to preserve it, starting from all of us individually. Society is all of us people working together and collaboratively to preserve harmony, prosperity and stability around the world. Capital and capitalism are tools we use in order to generate value, enhance wealth across all aspects of it (not only money) and create a real impact for nature and society. Capital has to serve nature and society, not the other way around.
Hopefully in 2024, leadership will stand up, the international organizations will matter, the global community will engage in a more cohesive way and form the required policies so equitably and inclusively more individuals can get through their major hurdles.
But most importantly, may all of us have the required gratitude and love for life, and develop a deep understanding of our potential, through any role we have in society, business we do and partnerships we form so we act and make a difference, make a real impact.
Wishing you all health, peace, prosperity, personal evolution and let’s hope we get to a better planet and form of a global society by 2025. 🙂
